I have never met a cheese I love more than good old burrata.
Mozzarella filled with cream?
Um yes! Sign me up!
I’m down for that anytime day or night!
And it is ah-maaaaaaa-zing in this burrata caprese salad.
Creamy cheese, sweet tomatoes, fragrant basil.
Heaven!
What the heck is burrata anyway?

Burrata is mozzarella’s creamier cousin.
It’s an Italian cow’s milk cheese like mozzarella.
Unlike mozzarella, only the exterior of the cheese is solid cheese.
The interior is full of cream and a type of soft cheese called stracciatella.
This makes for a richer cheese than mozzarella and an ooey gooey experience when you cut into it.
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies

To make this you’ll need:
- Tomatoes– Halved cherry tomatoes but you could use sliced roma tomatoes if you’d rather.
- Burrata– You can find this in the specialty cheese case in the grocer. It normally comes in a container packed in water like fresh mozzarella.
- Basil– Fresh basil not dried. There’s no substitute.
- Balsamic glaze– Honey and balsamic vinegar
- Optional– Sliced bakery bread or greens like arugula or both!

FAQs
What is the difference between caprese and burrata?
Caprese is not technically a cheese but a combination of fresh tomatoes, creamy fresh mozzarella, and basil. Burrata is a type of cheese that’s similar to fresh mozzarella on the outside but full of fresh cream on the inside.
What is burrata good with?
Everything! Anything you could put fresh mozzarella on or in would be delicious with burrata. You could use it in pasta recipes like Tomato Pasta with Burrata or Pea Pesto Pasta with Burrata and Sun Dried Tomatoes. It’s also incredible on pizzas, flatbreads, or in any form of caprese salad imaginable.
Can you eat the outside of burrata?
Yes! The outside or “the skin” of the burrata is just firmmozzarella. Eat it all!
Why is burrata so popular?
Burrata is having a moment. It’s fairly easy to find and comparably priced to other cheese. Plus, though it is simple, it feels really decadent thanks to that incredible creamy center.
Tips and Tricks

- Don’t want to make a balsamic glaze? Just drizzle on some balsamic vinegar or even pesto and a squeeze of lemon juice.
- You could use heirloom tomatoes or roma tomatoes instead of cherry tomatoes.
- I highly recommend serving this with slices of baguette or crostini so you can get all that cream from the burrata.
- This is easy to double or half if you are feeding a crowd or if you want to make an easy dinner for two.
