Equipment

  • 1 Hand Mixer You could use a stand mixer for the buttercream frosting if you prefer.
  • 1 Set of measuring cups or spoons
  • 1 Rubber Spatula
  • 1 Piping bag and tips You want to use these to help pipe on the frosting for fancier look.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup 2 sticks of room temperature unsalted butter
  • 4 cups plus more as needed of powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon of salt

Instructions

  • Beat the room temperature butter in a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or in a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer until the butter is light and fluffy (about 2 minutes).
1 cup 2 sticks of room temperature unsalted butter
  • Beat in the sugar, heavy cream, vanilla, and salt on low speed until the sugar has started to combine into the butter and cream.
4 cups plus more as needed of powdered sugar, 1/4 cup heavy cream, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, 1/8 teaspoon of salt, 1 cup 2 sticks of room temperature unsalted butter
  • After about 30 seconds, keeping the beater in the buttercream, turn the speed up to medium high. Continue beating until the frosting is creamy and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  • Adjust if needed, adding more powdered sugar if the frosting isn't sweet enough or if it is too thin for your liking. If you need to add more, beat in half a cup at a time until it reaches your desired taste and consistency. If your frosting is too thick, thin it by beating in a tablespoon of heavy cream at a time until it reaches the consistency you'd like.
  • Spread onto cake, between cookies, cupcakes, or onto another baked good. Enjoy!

Notes

Buttercream frosting is not always precise.
If you notice the frosting is a bit watery, add in a small amount of powder sugar and mix it in. You can add a bit more if it is still not thick enough.
If you notice the buttercream frosting is too thick, add in a small amount of heavy cream and re-mix. Add more as needed.
When adding the extra ingredients, use very small amounts - about a teaspoon - to help ensure you do not add too much. Also, always check it again after mixing it.
