I’m somewhat addicted to making silly things out of cookies for my kids. I love doing it. I’ve made Oreo bunny butts and pumpkins. And semi homemade turkey cookies for Thanksgiving. But nothing for Valentine’s day yet unless of course you count my homemade chocolate hearts.

Well, that stops today. I give you my Bee Mine Bumblebee Cookies.

Quite possibly the cutest thing to ever happen to cookies? I think so.

Bumblebee Cookies

When I do fussy food crafts like this, I like to make it as easy as humanly possible. Meaning, I almost never use homemade cookies for the base of these creations. Instead, I’m using Oreos in this (double stuff if you want to be particular here).

Do you have to use Oreos? Nope! You could use any other cookie you like. Good choices for this project would be:

Kitchen Materials Needed to Make Bumblebee Cookies

Believe it or not, you don’t need anything fancy to make bumblebee cookies. Most of the required kitchen tools you probably have already. To make this easy Valentine’s Day cookie you need:

Edible Ingredients for Valentine’s Day Oreos

Ingredients for bumblebee cookies: yellow candy melts, chocolate chip, candy eyes, oil, Oreos, heart sprinkles

Ingredients for Bumblebee Cookies

Aside from the kitchen materials you need for this project, you need some edible ingredients. To make these bumblebee cookies you need:

  • Oreos. Don’t like Oreos? Get off my blog. KIDDING. You could use another sturdy cookie like Nutterbutters or Milanos.
  • Yellow candy melts1 package of Wilton’s yellow candy melts is all you need.
  • Chocolate chips. I used dark chocolate to get closer to a bumblebee black but you could use semi sweet or even milk chocolate if you would rather.
  • Oil. Olive oil or coconut oil will help thin the chocolate or the candy melts so you get a smooth candy coating instead of a really thick candy coat.
  • Candy eyeballs. For this project, I like the smaller candy eyeballs. The big ones are cute for this too. Use whichever you like.
  • Big flat candy heart sprinklesThese Wilton ones work really well for this.
  • Little heart sprinklesTotally optional but they add extra decoration.

How to Make Bumblebee Cookies

Making these Bee Mine Cookies isn’t hard to do. Let’s break it down into steps:

  1. Melt the candy melts.
  2. Dip the cookies into the melted candy.
  3. Decorate the cookies.
  4. Let set.

How to Melt Candy Melts and Chocolate Chips

Melt the candy melts

Properly melting the candy melts and the chocolate chips is probably the most difficult part of making these bumblebee cookies. And not really hard, but you need to get the candy melts and the chocolate to the right consistency without burning them or under melting them.

If you burn the candy or the chocolate, it will clump and dry out. Plus it will taste terrible. If you undermelt it, it will be too thick and the cookies won’t dip well.

To get the consistency right, put the candy melts in a microwave safe bowl and microwave them for 15 seconds. Take them out and stir and microwave again for 15 seconds. Stir. Repeat this process in 15 second increments until the candy melts are melted. Add about a tablespoon of oil to the candy melts once the candy is melted and stir it in to thin out the melted candy and make it shiny.

You can follow this process for melting the chocolate too.

Dipping the Cookies

Oreos dipped 2/3s of the way into yellow melted candy on a tray lined with parchment

Dip the cookies about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way into the melted candy melts

Once the candy has melted, dip an Oreo into the melted candy about 2/3s to 3/4s of the way in, leaving the top 1/3 to 1/4 bare. Shake the Oreo after you dip it in the melted candy to remove some of the excess.

Then place the dipped Oreo onto a cookie sheet lined with wax paper to let the candy set. Let the Oreos sit on the wax paper until the candy has hardened. This can happen very quick or take more time depending on the temperature and humidity level. To speed things up, pop the tray in the fridge for about 20 minutes. The cookies are ready to work with when you can touch the yellow candy melts without leaving an imprint.

Once the yellow candy melts have hardened, melt the chocolate chips.

When they are melted, dip the uncovered parts of the Oreos into the melted chocolate. Put each Oreo on the wax paper lined tray.

Decorating Easy Bumblebee Cookies

Now we’re ready to decorate the cutest bumblebee cookies. To decorate, start by press the candy eyeballs onto the still soft melted chocolate. After the eyeballs are on, spoon the rest of the melted chocolate into a piping bag fit with a small round tip.

Now pipe stripes of chocolate across yellow part of the Oreos. Press a heart sprinkle or cake decoration onto the stripes on each bumblebee. Let set until the chocolate is hard. Serve and enjoy!

These tips and tricks will make it easier to decorate your bumblebee cookies:

  • When you press the eyeballs onto the melted chocolate, work quickly so it doesn’t harden.
  • If you find the chocolate has hardened on the cookie before all the eyeballs are on, just pipe a little chocolate onto the back of the eyeballs before pressing them onto the bumblebee cookies.
  • If you make a mistake, don’t worry! You can cover anything up with a well placed heart sprinkle.
