I am not a morning person. Or a breakfast eater. I am a chug coffee until I am finally awake enough to realize I am hangry kind of person.

It’s not a good situation. For anyone involved because I get kind of mean when I’m hangry.

And summer multiplies my breakfast troubles times a million. Because it’s too hot in my unairconditioned house to cook eggs or eat oatmeal or something. So that means all the smoothies like this slightly tart, lightly sweet cherry berry smoothie or these sunshine citrus berry smoothies.

    Why make a morning smoothie?

I’m not going to give you a list of health benefits or try to sell you on a smoothie being a magic bullet to good health. I like making morning smoothies in the summer for a few reasons:

    • they are easy and require literally zero thought, fussing or cooking which is key before coffee
    • so yummy
    • refreshing in the summer particularly if I have one post run, which I often do
    • reasonably healthy because fruits and veggies and all of that
    • almost no clean up besides rinsing out the blender and sticking it in the dishwasher

And of course, I think they are pretty. I mean, so perfectly pink. Love it.

    Make your smoothie your own.

I love these smoothies as is. I’m pretty basic with what I want in a smoothie. Essentially I just want a smoothie that tastes delicious and refreshing while being mostly healthy (no added sugars etc.). But I don’t care a ton about mixing in vegetables or protein especially since I eat lots of veggies naturally. And I prefer getting my protein from food instead of powders and additives.

But if you want to sneak some veggies in by all means do it. You could absolutely blend in some spinach or kale into this but you will loose the pretty pink color though. You could also blend in plain Greek yogurt for extra protein or even some chia seeds. Whatever you want.

I like it with the basic combo of unsweetened cherry juice, milk, and fruit.

Fresh or frozen fruit for a smoothie?

Some people will be team fresh fruit all the way, but I say no! Frozen fruit for a smoothie. It will blend up better and it is less expensive than fresh fruit even when fresh fruit is in season resulting in a thicker smoothie. And you aren’t loosing anything in terms of taste whereas if you use fresh fruit, you need to put ice into the smoothie and it waters it down.

With frozen fruit, you just add the frozen fruit, milk, and juice to a blender and blend until smooth. Then you’ve got yourself a light refreshing cherry berry smoothie that’s perfectly creamy, lightly sweet, and just a little tart. The best way to start your day!

    • 12 ounces frozen mixed berry cherry blend
    • 1 cup milk of your choice
    • 1 cup tart cherry juice
