Instant Pot Stuffed Apples

Fall feels like it came super fast here this year even though it still also feels like the millionth day of March. I know really we’re somewhere in mid September and normally it’s still warm here. Basically still smoothie season.

This year though, the nip to the air has already showed up. I can’t say I’m sad about it.

I love the crisp cool mornings and the cozy breakfasts. And hello sweatshirt weather!

I can’t think of a better way to start a day than with a cozy warm baked stuffed apple while wearing my favorite sweatshirt and coziest lounge pants. It’s the ultimate in fall mornings and people I am so here for it.

These apples stuffed with oatmeal and walnuts are a delicious breakfast or a yummy light dessert. And making them in the Instant Pot means you won’t spend all morning waiting for them to bake. They are ready super fast- in under 15 minutes, meaning you can have a warm start to the day any day of the week.

How to Make Instant Pot Stuffed Apples

This version of healthy crisp is super easy to make in your Instant Pot. You’ll need at least a 6 quart Instant Pot and the trivet that came with the pot.

To do it:

  1. Prepare the apples.
Scoop the core of the apple with a spoon.

Scoop the core of the apple with a spoon.

Cut the apples in half and scoop out the seeds and core to create a cavity in each apple.

Hollow the apple halves out so there is a cavity to stuff.

    The Cleaned Out Apples

When the apples are hollow, sprinkle each with cinnamon.

  2. Mix the filling.
    The oat mixture

    Mix the Filling

In a small bowl, mix together the oats, half of the maple syrup, spices, chopped walnuts if using, and 3 tablespoons of apple cider.

  3. Stuff the apples.
    Stuff the apples.

    Stuff the apples.

Once the filling is prepared carefully spoon a heaping tablespoon into each hollowed out apple. You may have to use a little more or a little less depending on the size of the apple you are using.

  4. Pressure cook.
Place the apples in the trivet in the Instant Pot.

    Pressure cook the apples.

Pour the remaining cider into the bottom of the Instant Pot liner. Then, set the trivet inside the Pot. Carefully place each apple on the trivet, stuffed side up. Secure the lid on the Pot. Pressure cook on high for 1 minute. Let the pressure naturally release for 5 minutes, then quick release the rest. Open the lid and carefully remove the apples. Sprinkle with walnuts if using. Serve and enjoy!

Can I make this in the oven?

Yes! I have a recipe for an oven baked stuffed apple recipe here and it is so good if you have more time to cook something more slowly.

What kind of apples should I use to make these Instant Pot apple crisps?

Baked Stuffed Apples

I prefer a firm tart apple for this recipe like Granny Smith. Other crisp apples that would work well in this would be:

  • Jonagold
  • Braeburn
  • Honey Crisp

Be aware that those apples are a little less firm and sweeter than Granny Smiths.

Tips and Tricks

Instant Pot Stuffed Apples are a delicious breakfast or a light dessert.

Instant Pot Stuffed Apples

  • It’s easiest to pour the apple cider into the pot before you place the trivet with the apples on. You don’t want to knock the oatmeal off of the apples and into the bottom of the pot.
  • Feel free to omit the walnuts if you have an allergy or just don’t like them.
  • Adjust the cook time as needed based on the size of the apple. The apples I used were pretty standard grocery store apples that you can buy in the multipound prepacked bags. However, if you buy the individual apples or go apple picking, you’ll find the apples may be much bigger. If that’s the case, you will need to pressure cook them for 2-3 minutes and natural release for 5.
  • If you like your apples a little softer, you could pressure cook them for an extra minute or natural release for an extra 5 minutes.
